A sugar makers job is never over...Even though the sap flows and syrup is made in the early spring, sap tubing maintenance and repair is always ongoing. One of our greatest challenges is the red and gray squirrels...They seem to have a taste for the plastic tubing and fittings that makes making sugar much easier than the buckets used back in the day. But with this new system comes constant maintenance of the sugar bush.
Our job is to start checking for damage caused by squirrels, deer, coyote and downed branches. This not only gives us a boost when sap season comes, but gets us out into the beautiful sweet smelling woods this time of year. The more we look after the woods now, the less walking we will have to do in the deep snow come late
winter, hopefully.
